Although it was the mayor’s State of the City address, the packed Camden High School auditorium on Thursday evening felt more like a pep rally for a team heading to the state finals.
After his introduction, the lights came up, and Mayor Victor Carstarphen, the former Camden basketball star, emerged from the back of the room and went down one aisle and up the other shaking hands and greeting the residents, business leaders, politicians, government employees and others.
The outstanding basketball player in the 1980s said Camden’s progress in recent years was a team effort, one with many, many people to thank – and he proceeded to do so with a litany of names of people who have contributed to the formerly beleaguered city’s rise in recent years.
“We still have work to do, but our progress is real,” the mayor said. “Our efforts are all aimed at improving the quality of life in Camden neighborhoods.”
