On August 3, the City of Camden and Camden County kicked-off the start of construction for the complete rehabilitation and expanded Whitman Park. Mayor Carstarphen and Camden County Commissioner’s Nash and Dyer were joined by former Eagles quarterback and founder of the Jaws Youth PlayBook Ron Jaworski, Senator Nilsa Cruz-Perez, Assemblyman William Spearman, federal, state and local leaders, the Whitman Park baseball, football and cheerleading programs, as well as the community to celebrate the start of the $4.6 million park construction project.
The current 6.5 acre park will be completely rehabilitated and expand into the old Camden Labs site, which was once a blighted and environmentally sensitive property impacting the community. Through state and federal partnerships, funding from NJDEP and the USEPA, the Camden Redevelopment Agency fully remediated the Camden Labs site. Now, this project will expand the park into the site providing for a 10-acre community recreational facility that will also be home to the Whitman Park football, cheerleading and baseball programs.
The project is part of a continuing $19 million commitment by Camden County to improve 10 parks across the city. Funding from the NJDEP Green Acres Program and the Jaws Youth PlayBook will also complement the Camden County investment for the construction.
