Preliminary plans to demolish part of the 80-year-old Ablett Village public housing complex in Cramer Hill and build 78 affordable-housing townhomes have been approved by the city Planning Board.
Demolition of 10 existing buildings and new construction on the site at East State Street and River Avenue are expected to start late next year.
When Phase Two of the project begins about one and a half years after the first phase, all of Ablett Village – the oldest operating public housing project in the city – will have been razed, and new townhomes constructed in its place. More than 600 residents live in Ablett Village, which was built in 1942 to house defense workers and named after William Stanley Ablett, a Camden resident killed in World War I.
