Janell Simpson recalled how her mother, a social worker, was “like an unofficial neighborhood watch” as she grew up in East Camden.
“She strongly felt that we should not have drug dealers on our corner,” Simpson remembered. “So she would confront them. It wasn’t the safest thing to do, but they knew her, and we did not have any dealers on our corners.”
Her mother’s strength and fearlessness − and her mission to help people and make the city a better place to live − inspired Simpson to pursue a career in law enforcement. And that career has led her to be a trailblazer in Camden policing: On Friday, Janell Simpson became the first woman and first Latina to reach the rank of deputy chief.
