Well-Lit Streets Make Everyone Safer. Here's How One Nonprofit is Helping

By Cherry Hill Courier Post, Phaedra Trethan, October 25, 2022

Some residents were curious about the young men and women in yellow vests walking through Whitman Park late this summer, Lily McCullough recalled.

She was one of them, part of a cohort from Hopeworks 'N' Camden, a nonprofit that trains people ages 17 to 26 for careers in technology. Some alumni, like McCullough, go on to work for Hopeworks. Others have found well-paying jobs with American Water, Subaru, The Michaels Organization, the Philadelphia Water Department, Cooper Hospital and the Delaware River Valley Planning Commission, among others.

They were members of Hopeworks' GIS (graphic information systems) mapping team, and they were fanning out across the Camden neighborhood to track where streetlights are, what condition they were in and whether or not the light worked.
