When Morgan Village Middle School Principal Jahnia Robinson was asked about a highlight of the new school year, which began Thursday for Camden city schools, she was unwavering in her answer: The district is doing its own busing.

Few out-of-the-classroom issues affect a student more than reliable, on-time transportation to and from school each day. Last year, Camden and other districts were plagued by outside busing contractors that faced a driver shortage and sometimes provided spotty service with late or missed buses.

Camden's school district this year is operating 14 buses with 12 full-time drivers who are district employees, and more are being hired, Superintendent Katrina T. McCombs said in a previous interview with TapInto Camden. Some service continues to be provided by outside vendors.
