CAMDEN – Subaru of America has posted its best-ever sales month in August, with 70,039 vehicle sales

The monthly total rose 9.3 percent from a year earlier and topped the previous record, set in December 2018, of 64,541 sales, the firm said.

“Year to date, Subaru also sold a record 473,670 vehicles, up 6.1 percent compared with the same period last year despite a tightening market,” the Camden-based auto distributor said in a statement.

The firm said August was its 66th consecutive month with sales of more than 40,000 vehicles.

The company noted record monthly sales for its Ascent SUV, which rose 72.8 percent from a year earlier, and for its Crosstrek model, up 33.3 percent. Forester sales rose by 10.6 percent over the year.

But sales plunged by 25.6 percent for WRX/STI models.

Year-to-year declines were 9.6 percent for the Legacy, 7.8 percent for the Impreza and 5 percent for the Outback, which was still Subaru’s top-selling car with 17,110 units in August.

New 2020 Legacy and Outback models are expected to boost sales, the company predicted.

“These carlines will help us achieve more record months later this year and get us to our 2019 calendar year target of 700,000 units,” said Jeff Walters, the firm’s senior vice president of sales.

Subaru sold a little more than 680,000 vehicles last year, a 5 percent increase from 2017.
