Students and teachers in the city will get a new, unique classroom next fall: A 49-foot-long, solar-powered catamaran that will take them up and down the Delaware River as part of their studies about the environment and the river.
The vessel, to be custom-built next year, will leave the Wiggins Park Marina at the city's waterfront and take the students for a hands-on school day paired with what they have learned in the classroom.
These will be no junkets – depending on their studies, the students will take samples of the water, drag a net to capture creatures from the river bottom or put ashore for nature studies. An on-board microscope and video screen can be used during the lessons.
